Katie Brookes

Where are you originally from?

I’m originally from Monmouth County, New Jersey (aka “The Shore”). After having moved to Baltimore, I can now say I have lived in a beach town, the mountains and a big city!

If you were invited to give a TED Talk, what would it be about?

Don’t take education for granted. I wish I took more history, economic or language classes rather than aerobics or flag football when I had time in my schedule as an undergraduate. It may seem fun at the time, but I definitely regret it now, especially when I’m watching Jeopardy!

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Running is pretty much my second job! It is one of the most important “hobbies” I have and truly enhances my life. There is nothing better than getting up early on a Saturday morning and meeting up with friends to go on a long run. And of course, having a huge greasy breakfast afterward!

If you had your own talk show, who would be the first two guests you’d like to interview?

My first guest would be my younger self. I definitely have a lot of questions for her! Second would be Ellen DeGeneres — I mean come on, she is just the greatest and I bet she would like a break from being the interviewer.

How did you come to find yourself at LaunchTech?

I applied to LaunchTech back in 2017, but they were not hiring at the time. I found myself no longer motivated at my last “job” and knew I wanted a career and to be challenged more. I was extremely excited to get a chance to interview with the team and can say getting hired here is one of my proudest moments to date. I’m very lucky to have a career where every day is different, I’m constantly learning new things and proud of the work I do.

What do you find most interesting about cybersecurity or technology?

I’m not sure if it’s because cybersecurity is the field I work in, that I notice it is everywhere; government, finance, healthcare, the list goes on and on. I’m intrigued by phishing and seeing the lengths and extremes people will go to when hacking someone.
