Steve is a communications professional with extensive experience developing content and strategic communications plans in a variety of fields, including defense, technology and healthcare. He is an agile, adaptable writer and planner that can quickly move from executive messages one moment to explaining technical capabilities the next.
Originally a history teacher, Steve entered the communications field as an officer in the Maryland Army National Guard, where he became a Department of Defense trained Public Affairs Officer (PAO) after graduating from The Defense Information School’s Public Affairs Qualification Course at Fort Meade.
In 2017, Steve deployed to the Middle East as his unit’s PAO and supported operations across five different countries. After coming home in 2018, Steve left his teaching career and gained valuable experience in both internal and external communications while also earning his M.S. in Communication Management in 2021.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I am originally from Harleysville, Pennsylvania but I have spent most of my life in Maryland.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?
I grew up watching (and reading) Jurassic Park, so definitely a paleontologist!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I became a dad in 2020, so my favorite thing is spending family time with my wife, daughter and Patton, our dog. Some of my other favorite things include reading, cooking, cheering for the Ravens and traveling.
DO YOU HAVE A SECRET TALENT OR HOBBY?
I would describe myself as an amateur chef. I really enjoy cooking, and when the weather cooperates, smoking meat and grilling.
WHAT DREW YOU TO THE FIELD OF PR AND COMMUNICATIONS?
I became a Public Affairs Officer (PAO) Maryland Army National Guard and served part time in that capacity until I deployed to the Middle East in 2017. Working as a full-time deployed PAO allowed me to fully appreciate the communications field and how each day brings its own problems that need to be solved. When I came home in 2018, I made a career change from history teacher to communications professional. I haven’t looked back since!
WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST INTERESTING ABOUT CYBERSECURITY OR TECHNOLOGY?
The cybersecurity and technology fields are interesting because they are so vital to our national security and defense. Additionally, both fields are constantly evolving so there is always more to learn each day!
